RentNotice.org provides a free document preparation tool that helps California tenants draft a formal habitability demand letter to their landlord pursuant to California Civil Code §1941.1 and related state and local housing laws. An optional paid upgrade adds photographic chain-of-custody evidence to the letter. By using this service you agree to these Terms.
RentNotice.org is not a law firm, we are not attorneys, and nothing on this platform constitutes legal advice. We provide a template-based document preparation tool. If you need legal advice about your specific situation, please consult a licensed California attorney or a tenant rights organization such as Stay Housed LA (stayhousedla.org) or Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.
You are solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and truthfulness of all information you provide. By generating a letter through this platform you certify under penalty of perjury that the information is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge. We do not verify any of the information you provide. Any errors may affect the legal validity of your letter.
This platform does not mail or otherwise deliver the letter to your landlord on your behalf (unless you specifically pay for and select a mailing upgrade, where offered). You are responsible for printing and delivering the letter to your landlord in an appropriate legal manner — whether by certified mail, personal delivery, or other means that creates proof of delivery.
The paid photo evidence upgrade unlocks a mobile phone workflow that lets you capture photographs of the habitability conditions at the rental property. Each photograph is associated with:
This creates a chain-of-custody record that may be useful in legal proceedings, though its admissibility depends on the specific circumstances and is at the discretion of the court. We make no guarantee that any chain-of-custody record we produce will be accepted as evidence.
The basic demand letter is free. The photo evidence upgrade uses a pay-what-you-think-it's-worth model with a minimum of $2 to cover payment processing fees. Suggested tiers are $2, $5, and $10. All payments are processed securely by Stripe. Payments are non-refundable once photo capture has begun.

You can unsubscribe from marketing at any time via the link in any marketing email. We will never sell your email address. We comply with the CAN-SPAM Act and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
Free letters: may be deleted after a reasonable period of inactivity. You should download a copy and keep it in a safe place.
Paid letters (with photo evidence upgrade): are stored permanently so you can always come back and reference them, reprint with updated photos, or escalate with a new notice if the landlord never responds. The $2 minimum fee includes indefinite retention of your letter and all associated photos, GPS data, and chain-of-custody records. You can request deletion at any time by contacting support.
We do not sell, share, or use your photos or property information for any purpose other than delivering the letter and maintaining your records.
