Privacy Policy

1. Our Core Principle
RentNotice.org verifies notice authenticity only. We do not verify, identify, or collect information about tenants. We verify that a notice is real. We do not verify who is holding it.
2. What We Know
- Phone numbers: Stored as one-way cryptographic hashes (bcrypt). Cannot be reversed.
- PINs: Stored as one-way cryptographic hashes. Cannot be reversed.
- QR tokens: Random UUIDs. Not tied to any identity.
- Verification events: Timestamp that a notice was verified. Nothing more.
- Notice metadata: Date, address, notice type, landlord name — public record information.
3. What We Do NOT Know
- Tenant names or identity
- Immigration status
- Who scanned a QR code
- Whether the person verifying is the named tenant
This is not a workaround. This is the product. Privacy by design is our architecture.
4. SMS Communications
RentNotice.org sends transactional SMS messages for notice verification only. Messages are sent after tenant opt-in consent via SMS reply. We do not track link clicks, device information, or any activity beyond SMS delivery confirmations. Reply STOP to any message to opt out permanently.
5. Data We Do NOT Collect
- No analytics tracking — no Google Analytics, no tracking pixels
- No advertising cookies
- No device fingerprinting
- No location tracking
- No browsing history
6. Data Sharing
- SMS delivery: Twilio Inc. receives phone numbers solely for message delivery.
- We do not sell data. Ever. To anyone. For any reason.
7. Data Retention
- SMS sessions expire and are deleted after 10 minutes
- Verification events retained for public safety reporting (anonymized)
- Phone number hashes retained for account continuity
8. Legal Requests
If served with a subpoena or government data request, RentNotice.org can truthfully respond: "We hold hashed phone numbers and verification tokens. We do not have names, addresses, immigration status, or any identifying information. We cannot identify any tenant."
This is not obstruction. It is privacy by design. You cannot produce what you do not have.
